in the blackness of night
i wake
head pounding
stomach churning
thoughts bouncing around my skull
ricocheting endlessly
the dull red glow
of the numbers on the clock
stare at me without pity
time doesn't care
time can't be reasoned with
it moves forward
dragging and sprinting
sometimes simultaneously
and as these and other thoughts
refuse to quiet down
resignedly I arise

I too have lain awake for the past hour or so -- too early to wake up, yet unable to fall back to sleep. Something in the air?
I had the same problem this morning! Enjoyed your poem.
